The Walter Harris Gents Society was founded in 2021 at KIPP Central City Academy in New Orleans, inspired by the legacy of Walter Frederick Harris, Jr. Walter Harris was a beloved and respected educator and community leader who dedicated his life to enhancing the lives of underprivileged young men through mentorship, education, and community service. His commitment to his family, students, and community left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. After his passing, his vision and passion for empowering young men were carried forward by two of his former colleagues, Joseph Caldwell and Nigel Palmer.

Founder

Joseph Caldwell

A transformative leader and award-winning educator based in New Orleans. With a Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies from Dillard University and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education, Joseph has excelled in roles such as Lead Teacher, Grade Team Leader, and Assistant Principal at KIPP New Orleans. His innovative leadership and teaching methods have placed him in the state’s top 5-10% of teachers.

As the founder of the Walter Harris Gents Society & Crescent City Society, Joseph is dedicated to empowering young men through education and community service. His efforts, including distributing over 100 turkeys and toys annually, highlight his commitment to making a positive impact in his community.

Nigel Palmer

A dedicated educator and servant leader in New Orleans. With a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Xavier University of Louisiana and currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, Nigel has a passion for integrating media literacy and digital engagement into education.

Nigel has been an educator at KIPP New Orleans for seven years, serving in roles such as Lead Teacher, Grade Team Lead, Basketball Coach, and Mentor. His solution-oriented leadership and commitment to fostering authentic environments for youth have earned him recognition as a finalist for the region-wide “Team and Family” award.

As the co-founder of the Walter Harris Gents Society & Crescent City Society, Nigel is committed to empowering young men and serving the community that raised him. His leadership extends to organizing community service events and mentoring young men to become responsible and resilient leaders.
